It is indicative of the ongoing emotional immaturity of the general populace that such explorations/warnings seem possible only in fiction form. Many of the great literary works on the ‘human problem’ and long standing human psychologies that underpin our human violences in blatant and nuanced ways, have been written via fiction. I say immaturity because it is as if ‘make believe’ is the only acceptable means of revealing widespread human psychologies as they actually are, and of course where they can lead (and have led us before).

“The breakdowns of normality when oil outages begin will be seen by many as a licence to flip into a different ethical code which, from where we stand, will be hard to recognise or believe. A well-behaved society is contained in a thin membrane which has been assumed to be a given. But it is not a given.” Dr David Fleming.

The human imagination is a marvellous and creative tool. When combined with the science of physics and energy, understanding of the processes of our brains, awareness of the complexity and fragility of a finite planet and life, awareness and learning from human history, and an understanding of the reality that is cause and effect – such honesty and explorations in real time could be the means by which we actually avoid apparent fictions that are indeed realistically possible futures. That however would require a confronting of the reality that are pretty pitiful human psychologies, not in fiction form, but in each of us. Daily observation attests however that it is the illusion that we and our species is ‘sapient’ that is preferred. Life will take care of that illusion.

As individuals, communities, and as a species, we never have or will, exist in ‘dystopia’ or ‘utopia’. We do and will exist in the combined effects of each of our responses, past and present, to the determinisms (causes) that have made us and our lives, now.
